Required traditional photo

Whenever we three get together we have a photo taken of us indulging in our very traditional glass of wine.  These photos have varied a little over the years, but here we are again.

Ladies luncheon

As part of the anniversary activities, all of the female relatives gathered for a luncheon on December 29th.  There were three generations of descendants of our mother. Individual rings had been made for everyone, from our mother's wedding silver, as a surprise for all.The youngest generation were on their best behaviour, and looked askance as the older relatives got quite silly discussing the behaviour of the owls, who were also in attendance.

Once the ice was broken, and the waitress brought a dish of sliced lemons, the youngest ones took over.

We may think we invented silliness, but obviously we've passed it along to our children.

home again

and nothing has changed.  The cat cries for attention, the dogs try to climb into my lap, Jim is still asleep.Today is all the domestic chores I haven't had to do in days.  I miss you already.

Anniversary gifts

These flowers were a wonderful surprise from my Sister-in-law.  The appearance is different depending on which side you look at.  they are beautiful no matter where you look, and as an aside, I've been looking for a vase like this for a couple of years.  Bonus!

On the bus--One more sleep!

According to my information, Beth left North Bay, on the bus, about 10 minutes ago.  Thinking about you Kiddo!

No pictures

but we did salute the family and being apart and together.  We were a couple of minutes late, and all sitting around the living room with tv tables full of food..   There was no way anyone could move to access a suitable glass, but the family was remembered.  We thought of all of you in your own homes, and gave thanks for our pending reunion.

Dinner was at Sheila's home on Churchill Drive, west of Osborne.  Darren and Amber were a little late and not really sure of where they were going, but Loren stood in front of the living room window, cell phone in hand, and guided them in.  They commented about seeing him in the window and realizing that this was the house.  Beth, it made me remember the train trip you took with, I think, both of your boys, but maybe just Will, and us all running out to the deck of the house on Woodside to wave at you, as the train rolled by.

It was a fairly small house--about 1000sq. ft., a bungalow.  She is slowly renovating it to suit herself, and this involves some significant renovations.  But, what I noticed about the neighbourhood was the number of very large homes that have been built there.  True mini-mansions, some of them on Jubilee, where it backs onto the river bank.  Quite a change to the neighbourhood we knew.

Merry Christmas from Neepawa

Merry Christmas!

Laundry

I don;t remember it as a McGrath Family Tradition, but laundry is on the Agenda for me too.  Jean didn;t need us at the dinner so we are staying here and having a roast chcken and pumpkin pie.  Rrain is coming over in a bit, most likely with her laundry, too.  Sunday is almost here!

Two More sleeps!

Oh Beth, I had to laugh.  Laundry is exactly what we had planned, for today.  Get it all done before the influx!  We are off to Sheila's for dinner today, but not until later.  This year I have done nothing other than supply the turkey and oatmeal.  David was off to the bakery to pick up some shtollen, yesterday, and bought a package of cinnamon buns, as well, so I don't even have to worry about breakfast this morning.

In your packing, would you maybe have a tiny corner of room for the owl templates?  I can't find the original reference, and would like to copy them while you're here.  If not--don't worry about it.  It was just a stray thought.  I must have you on my mind.  I had a strange dream last night.  The post man stopped to tell me that there were sixteen parcels for you waiting for pick up, but no body else but you could pick them up. He wasn't sure that they could be kept until you went for them.  Go figure!

Wonderful Christmas morning.....

...and wonderful greetings to everyone. Have a joyous celebration with family and friends today. Remember the Family Toast at 7 pm my time (6 pm your time). I shall be raising my glass to us all. Mike and Erin are both working but promise to raise a glass once they get home.  Mike will becoming off 5 straight days- 12 hour shifts-  so maybe all he'll be able to do is raise the glass haha!  They head out to Toronto in the morning to visit with her family.
No snow here, so truly a green Christmas. But I checked the Winnipeg and area weather on WFP and see that snow will be greeting me as I head west! Your reports on the blog have kept me up to date with current conditions as well, so no surprises!
Just put a load of wash on - do you think I'm the only person having to do a wash on Christmas morning?  We will head over to the Legion around 11 am for our Christmas Dinner. I'm actually looking forward to the outing. Maybe take my mind off the excitement I feel right now about leaving tomorrow. I have my most favourite Christmas song playing on the computer as I write. Chris Rea - Driving Home for Christmas. Seems most appropriate for this year.
All for now. If I don't get a chance to write before I leave... I'll leave you with these special few words....see you soon!  XXX

Happy Holidays!

Best wishes to all.  What we have been waiting for for a year is almost here.  I am sooooo excited

Three Sleeps!

I've been thinking about those readers who aren't in Winnipeg, and who will be worrying about whether Beth gets any sleep on the bus. We worry too. So, we will post a special message on the evening of the 27th letting you all know how she got along.

Packing

You just might appreciate the blanket during your travels, even if you have to carry around in a shopping bag.  Do you have some sort of covering that you wouldn't care if you lost during your travels?  Buses are drafty, and it could make the difference between sleeping and not sleeping.

We were able to get out for gas for the snow blower today, and a few groceries.  We've had a lot of snow in the past three days, and it still hasn't stopped falling.  David had to get out and blow part of the front street, so we could get out today.  I know the city will clear it sooner of later, but the street has narrowed by at least six feet, and there is a twit who parks her car right in front of the driveway, every single night, (yes, she has had tickets--doesn't help)  and personnel from the church usually park there during the day.  We were barely back home today, when she was back and parked right in the middle of the area David had blown out.  But we did buy a package of almond tarts for me and a "mickey" of Crown Royal for David, so we are set for today and tomorrow.

On the Bus....

I do not know what shall happen, really!  I guess this will be what's called 'winging it'  I do have a pillow, and up until this week also a blanket but very quickly I am realizing that space will be an issue, so the blanket stays back. As soon as I finish this message I will be taking a look at the clothes I have chosen (at least on my paper list) and seriously deciding what I will bring and what stays home. It depends on how much my ONE suitcase will handle because I am bringing other things as well, and when you look at toiletry articles, shoes, and of course Faith, her nest and spear, there seems little space to spare. However, it remains exciting and I have enjoyed all the time spent basically doing nothing to date - but it's now crunch time !!  The weather has been so unpredictable as well that it has been a bit of a challenge to decide - warm boots/hat/scarf/ winter coat/ mitts....or....lighter apparel. Inevitably, winter will be coming and very likely when I am away, and Winnipeg is already there... right? So I have to be prepared. Anyway, that's what is going on in my world today.....sunny and 10 degrees, with no snow!!   Take care

Four sleeps

Or three sleeps and a lesson on how to try to sleep sitting up, for Beth.  Do you plan to carry a pillow with you, Beth, or just a bottle of little blue "make me sleepy" pills?

I could use a nap myself

It was a late night last night and a very short night as well.  Why?  Because I was reading a book I just couldn't put down.  Four hundred and eighty six pages--of--wait for it--science fiction!  "Saturn Run" by John Sandford and Ctein.  It's been years since I read any science fiction, probably because I have become more interested in characterizations, than vivid imagination.   John Sandford is one of my favourite authours, but his books are more likely police procedurals with weird twists and turns, and featuring fascinating characters.  Well, this book has all sorts of very interesting and well developed characters, and the science was bizarre, but easy to understand.  I enjoyed every minute of it.

Five Sleeps!

or four sleeps and a pretty rough nap for Beth.

Sleeps

I just realized that I will be one sleep ahead of you folks. My number 7 sleep will be on the bus, and you and I know that won't really count as much of a sleep. So lets renumber OK:
You : 7, Me : 6  Sounds much better from my perspective.
As for your hair Cathy, everyone is going to notice I'm sure. Perhaps comb it a little to the side ??  haha
I had my suitcases out again today, and managed to get a few things organized. Getting a step closer anyway. And I decided to "practice" today. Long ago Harry bought me a box of wine and it has been sitting unopened in the corner - today I broke it open and had a glass. I even sat outside in the situpon and had a few sips thinking about the trip.
It is raining right now - what ever is going on with this weather? I may have to shovel water before the nights over. The next few days calls for the same mild and wet weather as well.  I guess it really will be a green Christmas.
Time for bed....Take care

Hair cuts!

I didn't get a hair cut.  Can I still come!!

Six Sleeps!

Things happen for a reason...

.......like a  fabulous haircut. A perfect example of how good things happen and at the best of times. Now you can truly relax and enjoy yourself over the next week or two. I was happy to read your blog. It made me feel happy too!  XXX

Getting to the last few chores

Getting my hair cut has had a red flag on my "to do" list. Today, I decided was the day.  About 6 weeks ago I got a haircut, at a different branch of m usual place, and it was the one of the worst ever.  There is one woman I trust with my hair, and today, darned if she wasn't there when I went.  A wonderful surprise.  There were two others waiting for her ahead of me, and another woman ready and able to cut hair, but once I saw Wendy I made the immediate decision to wait.  It took an hour, but one of the best decisions ever.  I told her honestly what had happened, and she told me she could see that there was something wrong while I was sitting waiting. One of the people ahead of me, was there because of the same problem. For quite awhile it was the other customer, and the two hairdressers, and we had quite a chat, especially when it came out that we had both had our hair cut at same place.  As a result, it will be taken further.  I also found out that, if you get a bad haircut, go back right away, and it can probably be fixed.  You don't have to wait for it to grow out.

When I saw how nicely my hair behaved, once she had cut it, I almost cried.  This had been a real problem for me, to the point that I have been avoiding going out, and if I had to go out, made sure to wear a very unflattering hat.  I am so relieved.  It is as if a weight has been taken off my shoulders, and now I can relax and enjoy the holidays.

Seven Sleeps!

Feeling rather special....

Now don't I feel very special reading all about your bedroom preparations - I know, I know, it's "anticipation". And don't I feel a bit anxious to get there now....you said how many sleeps? .....but I'm not sleeping most nights anyway- just laying in bed- I know, I know, it's "anticipation", right?
Today was our Christmas celebration with Mike and Erin, and a wonderful day it was....I'm all wound up right now, so hopefully blogging a bit and then maybe reading a bit might help to settle me before I hit the bed. I received a Zentangle Kit as a gift. A step by step book, a set of tiles, a set of pens and a handmade pouch (Erin's sewing) to hold the pens. I'm all excited - I shall bring it with me on the bus, and then will have it there for some fun one day when we are together. Cathy, I hope you will try it with me as well. Both beginners with our big sister as mentor?? I also received a beautiful shawl/scarf and pair of gloves for my trip. I'm going to look pretty spiffy!
Mike showed me the trailer for Star Wars The Force Awakens.  I was not aware that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammell appear in this movie! I said "too bad Harrison Ford wasn't in the movie" and he corrected me and put the trailer on for me to see. Mike goes with his friends tomorrow night to see it (could not get tickets until then) even though it opened Thursday night in North Bay. I guess it is a big hit and making mega bucks according to the reviews I've heard.
Well, I think I'll cut this short and take my new book to bed and have a good look.  In meantime, thinking of you all....take care.

Building a Bedroom for Beth

Yep, that's the task for today.  Wish I'd taken pictures to show you, but that would have meant an extra trip up and down the stairs, so not done.  We now have all of the furniture in place, and are waiting for the laundry to finish so that we can make the bed.  The colour of the duvet is still a shock to the eyes for me.  Hopefully it won't keep you awake at night, Beth.  The old sewing machine makes a fine night table.  ( we did audition a couple of other things)  You have a clock, a lamp, a box of tissue and an extra quilt--just in case.  I've even figured out a way for you to be able to hang up your clothes.

Now to the task of making spaghetti sauce.  In the slow cooker, of course, so that I can afford time to do more interesting things, this afternoon.

.wonderful!

I hope everyone checked out the Google logo today.  Celebrating Beethoven's 245th birthday.  It's a little puzzle but worth completing.  He is doing things with music in his hand, and drops it.  It gets all mixed up and you have to correctly  put it in order.  There are about five sections, but in the end you are treated to a performance of Ode to Joy.

Snow!

Be careful what you wish for!  No more worries about a white Christmas.  Yes, it's been snowing since we got up, large fluffy snowflakes, sometimes coming straight down and sometimes coming down sideways, but never stopping. David is not looking forward to getting the snow blower out tomorrow.  And today was garbage and recycling pick-up.  I certainly felt for the fellows emptying the bins.  Wrapped up in scarves etc and having to work so hard, despite the snow. We haven't been out, but have to get out sometime int he next couple fo days. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Snow?

We are not of the warning area this time so expect only a dusting if any.  It sure sounds like Winnipeg is going to get it though. We made a quick trip to Winnipeg today.  5 hours in the truck for a 2 hour meeting.  We finally signed the contract that we negotiated a year ago!  And then one person was missing anyway.  Jim drove me again.  I am still quite uncomfortable in this stupid boot and I know I couldn't sit still for that long of a drive.  I was constantly shifting my leg and moving around as he drove.  I find that by the end of the day all I want to do is go home and sit.  No exercise for me for a while. ( aw darn. what a shame )  The trees here have been covered with hoar frost for days.  We ahve had a lot of fog lately and it has settled.  They look beautiful but are starting to bend under the weight.  I got to stay in bed a bit later this morning so decided to take advantage of it.  I lay awake for a long time, but around 6:30 I fell into a real deep sleep.  I woke up at 7 curled up at the foot of the bed and totally disoriented.  I have no idea what I was dreaming of but it must have been real wild one.  Are you going to watch the republican debate tonight?  Do you realise that Donald Trump has over 40% of the republican candidate support!?!  I find that scary.  Glad to be Canadian.

Oh no... a few flurries

Today the temperature went down a bit and we actually had some flurries and a bit of white covering the ground now.  Today we also did some baking. Harry pulls some recipes off the net and I try to make them. Most never turn out. He wanted coconut  macaroons and I made them - mixing coconut and sweet condensed milk and beating eggwhites and folding into mixture , and then made little pyramids of batter onto the cookie sheet. So far so good, and put them into the oven. Then disaster struck. As they started to bake, they separated and the liquid flowed out and surrounded the little mounds. Harry pulled them out and into a bowl and added baking powder and flour, and made little cut cookies. They baked OK but were a bit hard. I covered them with melted chocolate and I guess we'll have to eat them??  Yesterday it was an equally disappointing disaster for me, and I had to try to rectify that today. I guess we'll have to eat that as well. It's OK though, because I have lots of my tried and true recipes that turned out successfully that I shall take up to North Bay for the boys.(New York Slice, and Peanut Butter Butterscotch Marshmallow Squares) I hope that will be all for baking for this year!
I'm all nice a shiny clean ready for my mammogram tomorrow in Huntsville.(No I did not put any deodorant or powder on haha!)
We'll visit the lady and do a bit of shopping before coming home. Thursday I am going to North Bay to do a few chores, and then Sat we go to treat Mike and Erin for lunch. They have chosen Boston Pizza. Have you eaten there?
Well, "beddy bye" time.  I have no books on the go right now having finished my Guardian trilogy last week, and don't wish to start anything new right now so soon before my trip.  I bought my ticket for the journey from Sundridge to North Bay yesterday, so all the arrangements are finalized now. Except, what to bring to wear? I keep changing my mind - not that I have that large a selection from which to chose haha. I'll think of something. Take care.

Recipes

Well, I do not have any recipes from family such as you mentioned, and certainly nothing from Grannie. I am not familiar with Aunty Margaret's vinatarta either, so I shall ask about that when I see you.
How can I forget Madame Benoit. I had the same binder of recipes as Dad did - I think it must have been about 3 or 4 inches think.  I wonder if I got rid of it, or else it is buried somewhere in the basement. It was my bible for any years, but at a quick glance I cannot see it on the shelf with the other cookbooks right now.
Rain, and drizzle and then more rain have been the order for this weekend. I stayed put mostly - fighting a cold that has me in it's tight grip. But a good excuse to sit and watch some of the Christmas movies I treasure this time of year.  Wednesday we go to Hunstville to visit the fine lady at the Nursing Home, and also for my mammogram appointment at the Hospital. And then Saturday we go to Mike and Erin's for Christmas celebration with them. Before I know it, I will be on the bus. Today I tried on some slacks to get an idea of what to pack. My suitcase space will be limited, so want to bring just what I will need for the special outings, and for our time relaxing at home.
Well, (cough cough cough), it must be time for bed. I'm trying to put it off because trying to lay in bed, and get to sleep, seems to be a real challenge with this cold.  Scooby is acting strange these last two days as if she has something wrong with her rear mobility. If it is not better tomorrow I may have to take her to Vet to have it checked. I hope nothing is really terribly wrong with her - fingers crossed.  Take care

Riding the bus

No, we're not playing "31".  Amber says that if you were dropped off at Deacon's, she could pick you up.  I think she's as far from Deacon's as we are, but it's all highway driving.  However--you sound fine with the bus depot, and we're fighting over who's going to pick you up, so maybe, all's right with the world.

This morning, David and I finished the business of Advance Directives and setting up the ERIK system for Emergency Responders.  I'm exhausted, but this was a process that we started earlier this year, when we saw the lawyer about Power-of-Attorney for both of us.  It needed doing and "tis done.

A friend gave us a small Fruitcake, and then I happened to read a "feel good", fluffy book about fruit cakes.  (Say what--Chocolate fruitcake??)  I had no idea that many families have their own special recipe for it.  I enjoy a fresh, good quality fruit cake, and often, each year, buy a small one just for the two of us.  The friend who gave us the little one ( 4 portions--very tiny) says that she has a square wooden pan she cooks them in, and usually makes two, which she portions out over the Christmas Season.  Each cake uses fourteen pounds of fruit.  I spelled that out so there was no mis-understanding.  Every year she buys 28 pounds of fruit to make her cakes.  Anyway, I have a vague recollection of a fruitcake recipe handed down from Grannie McGrath--in her own writing.  I couldn't find it, but did find a poor photo copy of it--so poor that some of the measurements are missing or illegible.  I doubt it took 21 eggs.  Do either of you have a copy?  Not saying I want to make it, but who knows?  I did find Auntie Margaret's recipe for Vinatarta.  Loren used to make it for us years ago.  I also found a fruitcake recipe attributed to Madams Benoit.  Remember her?

Bus pick up

Oh, Beth, don't worry.  This trip is becoming part of the whole anticipation thing.  We have plotted our route, and know which parking lot to wait in.  we now have people thinking it will be a privilege to be selected to make the trip.

David says that they probably come in around the perimeter ( makes sense!)  The only place they might drop you off is at Deacon's, and that's just as far for us to drive as it is to the airport.

Pick up

I called Greyhound to ask if there were a way I could be let off the bus closer to the core of the city instead of all the way to the Terminal near the Airport.  And thinking the bus is likely to come in on #1, and over to Portage Ave perhaps, I even thought if they could open the doors and let me off say near, or at Fermor and Lagidmodiere.....? Of course, the answer was No.
So it appears there will be no easy way to retrieve me short of coming to the Terminal. Sorry folks.

re: Visits

That's about what I had figured, Cathy.  Our next decision will be who goes to pick up Beth.  We made a dry run out to the airport.  (For some reason the airport is considered a campus, and when you try to Google it, you get all sorts of information and maps related to university and collage campuses from all over North America.  Go figure!)  Anyway, we now  know where to go and when, but the question is "who".    We'll sort it out.

I have no idea what the two words you used mean, but I get the idea that you are doing a general clean-up--just as I am around here. All I can say is " Expect lots of dust!"  Allergy alert!

Loren was over for few minutes last evening, so that we could familiarize him with our Power-of-Attorney documents, since he is part of both of them.  We also reviewed my Advance Directive, and he now has a copy of it, ( as well as copies of the POA documents).  He brought us information on the ERIK program.  This is an Emergency Response Information Kit, that is kept on the front of the fridge and contains emergency information and contacts, as well as a copy of the Advance Directive.  It is then available to any emergency response personnel who might come to the house and need the info.  Loren says this can be invaluable to responders, in helping them know how far to go, should there be any question.  Makes sense to me!

Visits

As far as I know we are arriving on the afternoon of the 27th and leaving on the afternoon of the A30th.  Of course I could be wrong :)  We finally have snow here.  I couldn't find our weather forecast but it seems the environment canada in its wisdom has decided that since the rms of North Cypress & Langford have consolidated they will now give us our forecast out of Brandon-Carberry.  Both of them south of # 1 and us at #16.  So, needless to say we were not included in the special snow advisory that was issued for what we thought was our area.  I will have to go back to the tried and true method of looking out the window.  I think I will still refer to the old forecast area cause after all these years we have been able to predict what our weather will be by understanding how the weather usually moves around us.  Maybe we can learn our new forecast area but it makes no sense right now.Back to work.  We are having a Kaisan and a Kanban this week.  (Welcome to the world of private industry)  I am not on the main team but I get to take part if there is not much office work.  Yesterday we emptied out what we call the old system vault and made 3 piles.  Needed here, Needed, but not here and not needed.  Then we dusted washed the surfaces.  I guess today things go back in their new logical homes.  Overtime we are supposed to do this to the entire office.  I dread entering Elisabeth's office.  Mine will be hard enough.  Today I sit in my office and watch the others hustle about.  My leg gets pretty sore by the end of the day so I am going to try to behave. (Never happen :))

Love the mouse!

Hope you find your way around the new computer programs without too much difficulty.  I know you will as you are good at that.  You wouldn't lose any info though in changing computers would you?
As for visiting, I made it clear in my message. I care not to flit about. I wish to be with you folks and enjoy my family. And Cathy will be there on 30th as well, right Cathy? When did you have to leave?
So thanks for the offer Pati, and I appreciate your thinking about it, but I am very content with my plans as they are now. XXX

Changes here

Today the fellow came to set up the new computer.  It came with Windows 10, and there had been a fair bit of apprehension, but things seem to be fairly easy to  get into.  I'll have to play with some of the actual programs, as we had to replace my Microsoft office, which includes both Word and Excell, and I know there will be differences.  But the fellow said that it's the same Word program as is on David's computer, and I've been using that for awhile--still finding my way around though.

I even get to use my "foxy" mouse.  David wouldn't let me have it until today.

We spent yesterday finishing our Christmas shopping, and while we were out I bought a small gift for myself ( the computer is supposed to be my Christmas gift).  Four good quality biscuit cutters.  I have wanted, at least, one of these for ages.  These come as a set.  I have been playing with them ever since.  I take them out of the box and fondle them, and then put them back in.  Good, strong stainless steel--and dishwasher safe! Now I need an excuse to cook biscuits or Imperial  cookies.

Tomorrow I have  a luncheon with my "Tuesday Stitchers", but otherwise, plan to spend the rest of the day wrapping gifts, although, this year, there will probably be more envelopes than parcels.

Beth, at this point, we have nothing planned for the 30th, or during the day of the 31st.  If you wanted to get together with your friend, I would be glad to drive you anywhere you wanted to go.

Fresh bread

Nothing beats the aroma of freshly baked bread. Just took a loaf out of the bread machine. And then cooked a pot of Red River cereal. This I shall enjoy for breakfast tomorrow morning.  In the morning I always have an urge for porridge or hot cereal and never want to actually cook it then. So I usually just have a quick toasted bagel or raisin bread.  So now I have no excuse not to enjoy my Red River cereal. Just heat and eat - quick !
Yesterday my friend Cheryl called from Winnipeg. This is the couple who cruised around the world and then sold their house in Petawawa and moved to Winnipeg end of April.  She invited me to have dinner at their place on Dec 29 - they would be celebrating their oldest son's birthday - he lives in Headingly.  I declined of course, saying my time in Winnipeg was limited and I intended to spend it all with my family. She accepts this but says if there were any time to meet for a coffee or lunch to let her know. I will definitely give her a call while I'm there but do not intend to gallivant about. So be warned , my time will be spent solely with you - if you tire of me you can confine me to the basement for a time out haha.
How goes it with you folks?  Slight bit of drizzle today but still wonderful weather.

Another step closer....

Got my hair cut this morning - really short - maybe too short!  I only have two weeks for it to grow in a bit. Oh no!  Look for a bald, tired, old woman at the bus terminal.
I logged onto WPF web site as I always do in the morning, and this morning watched the video they have posted of Clear Lake. Apparently a phenomenon as the ice has covered the lake but with no snow, it is just a thick layer of ice covering the entire Lake, and you can see right through to the bottom - even fish swimming, and with people skating on the surface. It is worth watching - give it a go....but Cathy, don't you head up to go skating.  Take care

Don't you hate it when the doctor is right!

He  told me to limit my walking for a month and when I did walk to walk "flat footed"  Well I was feeling pretty good on Saturday and decided it wouldn't hurt to do a little extra.  Yeah, right. I didn't leave the house on Sunday.  I guess I am one of those people that have to have proof.  I know it was my fault and have learned my lesson.  So for the next while it will be drive to work and drive home and if I have to go to the bank or drugstore I drive. Which makes me feel really silly since If it wasn't for Yellowhead Manor I could see both places from the office  I just kinda wish I could walk more balanced since my entire body is sore since I am walking so lopsided.  I 'll get used to it.  It's a bit early in the morning for a glass of  "Whine" but who better to vent to but your sisters.  Getting Close!

Me, too!

Amazing but true......our weather has been similar. Yesterday high was 5 degrees with sun. No snow (some still in ditches from our first real deluge a week or so ago) Now forecasting drizzle for tonight and maybe some snow tomorrow(?) but still it is nice warmish temperatures for this time of year.
So I guess you are really going to BBQ for supper Cathy? Will you have you deck table and chairs out haha!  I can visualize you sitting out on your deck enjoying the day. Of course you will be sitting with your feet up right!
We won't be doing the same here, but most probably I shall be wrapping a few gifts. Thursday we go to North Bay to see a concert of The Barra McNeills Harry won tickets on the radio.
Up early this morning to enjoy my coffee sitting on the chesterfield looking at my Christmas lights. This year it is a mere string of red cardinal lights draped over some pictures on the wall. No tree this year but still I am pretending and enjoying what I have. I put on the Christmas video of a roaring fire and relax (if even for a few quiet moments haha)
Enjoy the fine weather and try to keep the same for end of December OK?  Take care

sometimes ya gotta wonder......

I have no idea what will happen with my job now.  I don't really care.  It was just getting recognition for the job I am already doing, except that I would be able to complete it instead of passing it on to Elisabeth to accept.  As for Christmas.... I can pick up stuff when i come in for the big event.  I am not skipping that.  At this point Kris & family will be in for supper on the 28th and I can give Chloe her presents then.  She won't know.  I have been trying to walk flat footed, but I find it makes my entire body hurt.  Only 2 1/2 months to go. :(   At least it is the weekend now !!!!  And the weather!  Sorry Beth, but it is beautiful here.  We are bbqing steak on Sunday.  I appreciate not having lots of ice and snow with the boot, cause by the time it comes I will be experienced walking.  I'm counting sleeps

Set Back, again!

As I said in  previous post--"old age is a bitch!"  I think that originally came from Bette Davis.  I agree with Beth.  This is a time to sit back and chant the Serenity Prayer",  ending each recitation with a hearty "Damn It!"  But I echo Beth's question--is this just a postponement of your promotion, or is it at serious risk?

We have talked about it, and there is just no way we can afford a trip to Neepawa this month.  But, if Rrain is coming in every week or so, we would be willing and able to meet her anywhere in the city to pass along the mouse and chair.  We would just have to arrange a meeting place and time.

This can't be pleasant for you.....

Is it just a postponement of your work course scheduled for Wpg, or is this now up in the air?  Are you noticing any difference wearing your boot? I guess we won't be able to dance much together during the holidays haha!  So that leaves sitting in easy chairs and toasting to the celebrations - that should be fun!  Let us know how you are getting on OK- keep us updated. Take care

Quick note

I won't be in Winnipeg next week.  I saw the doctor today and while he didn't say I couldn't go he did say he would "recommend" that I didn't go.  He wants me to limit my walking and felt walking down Portage avenue might not be a good idea right now.  I have to keep the walking boot on for 3 months.  For December I should walk "flat footed" when I do walk. Maybe in January I can try for a more normal motion as I walk, but still with the boot on.  And no, I can't cheat and use a wrap on my foot when I am at home.  The only time the boot comes off is when I am in bed or the bath. So,  I guess my plans have changed.  This too shall pass.

Shopping as well.....

Yesterday was my shopping day with Mike, and I had been looking forward to it.  I was at his place for 9 am as arranged. Fortunately the weather and road conditions were not a factor which often is a deterrent for driving to North Bay in "winter". Erin was not working and feeling a bit left out ( Mike plan was, after all, shopping for her) so we had a coffee and chat there before heading out to the Mall!  It was quite busy and so many people rushing about. No wonder one is hesitant to join the fray at Christmas time haha  We had a good day and accomplished most of what we wanted and then over to Fabricland on the other side of the city to finish. I think I told you that Erin has taken an interest in sewing and in fact I was able to see some of her decorating in the apartment - and handbags she has already fashioned. So some of her gifts are related to encouraging that interest.(I bought her a gift certificate at Fabricland so she can choose her own fabric.)
On Wednesday we are going to visit the lady Phyllis in Huntsville and intend to shop for Mike then. I got a few ideas from him just in passing while we were together.
I do not see why we must feel guilty about our treats. I do not know what Dr Phil's book is suggesting, but I hope you get a few ideas. Sometimes it is just sticking to a game plan, even if it does include chocolate cake for dessert. Right now with all our baking I have indulged myself as well. Harry made more cookies yesterday while I was out.  Today I shall make Rice Krispie squares and then that's all the baking needed. Harry likes them and I have the ingredients in the cupboard so it won't be a chore.
So here's to another day...and it is officially now December. Time is drawing near folks......Cathy when can we also officially start to count sleeps? Take care

Swallowing my pride--

and I have to confess that today I bought the book  "Dr. Phil's 20/20 Diet".  I am a desperate woman, and acknowledge that I need all the help I can get. Mind you, this didn't stop me from have chocolate fudge cake for dessert when we were out for supper tonight.  Maybe I should read the book and not just possess it?

We spent the day Christmas shopping, and also paid off the balance for out trip.  A very expensive day!  But "tis done.

Coupons

Yesterday I felt like one of those ladies on the Extreme Couponing reality show ( or whatever the name of it is).  I had four $1.00 off coupons for a case of 12 cans of Diet Dr. Pepper.  It was on sale for $3.89/case, which was just over half price.  We didn't know this but there was also some sort of instant internet coupon for $3.00 off, with a limit of 2.  So my first 2 cases cost me $0.89, but then I had my $1.00 off coupons.  That meant that they paid me $0.11 per case for the first two cases I bought.  The next 2 cases were also on sale, and with my $1.00 of coupon cost me $2.89 each.  The last two cases I got for just about 1/2 price.

Grocery shopping is starting to be fun again.

Cookies

I have vowed not to do any Christmas baking.  But that hasn't stopped me from buying tarts and such.  No!  No!  Have to keep that under control. ( almond tarts, my favourite.  and warm mincemeat tarts with French vanilla ice cream.  Mm-m-m-.  No!  No! Don't do it!  Arg-h-h-h-h!)

After reading your blog, Beth, David spent time on the internet trying to find out if the game was being broadcast anywhere via that route.  Alas, no.  But evidently, it is somehow available via social media.  But let's not go there. David is excited, and we're trying to figure out how to plan supper around it.

Cathy, it sounds as though you are keeping active in the community despite your leg.  What were you able to find out about the coverage? It just doesn't sound right that you would have to pay.
And when do you come to Winnipeg?  Sounds like about a week from now.

I caught a quick glance of myself in the mirror this morning.  Who is that ugly old woman with the terrible haircut?  Not a good way to start the day.  I was also trying on some of my "good" outfits, to plan what I will wear at the end of the month.  Not a pleasant task.  Over the next month I have to plan what clothing to take away with me.  No budget for new clothes this trip, but I do have two bathing suits from last time, that should fit.  Old age is a bitch!

What to say

It has been a long couple of weeks.  I am learning to walk with my walking boot.  I don't have any shoes of a corresponding heel size so I am walking a bit lop-sided.  I am getting good on floors and can do stairs and have figured out a method to get into my truck, but Ice still scares me.  I don't feel stable on it.  Meanwhile, I broke another tooth on Thursday night, BUT when I phoned on Friday morning, miracle of miracles the dentist was working on Saturday and had an opening at 1:30.  Of course I was committed to work at the craft sale from 7am to 6pm but what the heck.  I said yes and worried about coverage at the craft sale later.  The sale seemed to go okay.  I read a couple of vendor evaluations and they seemed pleased.  Maybe others will say different.  One regular at our sale said it was the best she had ever done at any sale anywhere!   Today we do our annual Dicken's reading of A Christmas Carol.  I have to supply 100 cups of wassail (hot apple cidar) but I think my reading will have to be transferred to someone else.  I have no voice left.  It has been going all week but I had hoped it would be better by now.  Oh well. If I can't read I can either go home or get the treats in the kitchen ready.  Tim wants Jim to go to Edmonton for a few days.  He wanted both of us but my holidays are committed to after Christmas.  We really can't afford it, but Rodney is driving out for a few days on December 11 and if Jim went with him he could either return with Rodney after a few days or Tim has offered to fly him home later.  I think he should go even for a couple of days.  Of course I don't know if Tim has cleared this with Rodney yet.  They would leave on the 11th which means that I wouldn't see Jim from the time I left for Wpg until he got home from Edmonton, but I still think  he should go.  You never know when things might happen and they would never see each other again. I am counting the sleeps!

What is green, and yellow, and pink.....

........Can you guess what I was up to yesterday?
It includes little trees and bells and stars. And it includes lots of memories and great fun for me.
Your right ! I made Christmas Cookies in shapes of trees and bells and stars and then iced them and sprinkled (decorated) them with coloured sugar. I used a recipe card written out in Pati's printing from many years ago. It is a bit worn but that makes it even better.
Hope your ATC luncheon will be enjoyable Pati. What did you make for the sharing? And what are you up to Cathy?  Will you be watching the Grey Cup? Too bad we don't get it televised here. I would have enjoyed that.
Take care (We have no snow to worry about right now but I'm sure it will come again soon)

Why?

For several days all I did was shovel, and clean off the roof and try to manage the piles of snow accumulating. Last night and today it has rained and now the snow is almost gone (not quite) I had to put back all the drain pipes I had removed when the snow came, and although I have NOT yet set up the sump pump outside again, I have shoveled water a few times at the front. I may have to get the pump out after all. I am already tired of it all and it is only Nov 26. Speaking of which, one month today I shall be on my way. Not that I am counting haha. I walked up to the bank and Foodland and the Lottery Store this afternoon, and the 2pm bus coming into town from the south passed me on the street. I realized that it will be that very bus I shall be taking one month today up to North Bay, to connect with the Greyhound bus coming from Ottawa and travelling west.  And that thought made me smile!!!
We have reserved a seat for ourselves at the annual Legion Christmas Dinner for December 25.  We go for 11 am for fellowship and sing song, and then the meal is served at 12 noon. This will be just fine. We will have a Christmas Dinner without the fuss at home, and we will get back early so I can get myself ready for departure the next day.  It should be fun.  It was started years ago to provide a welcome place for those who might be alone on Christmas Day.  I have heard that it progressed to include any one from Town who wishes to join in, and apparently is quite popular, thus the need to make a reservation.(for a headcount to estimate how much food to make I guess)
Today I finally finished taking the paper off stamps for Harry. A few years ago he bought bags and bags of stamps, and only this summer and fall started to do something with them. At last count he has over 40,000 already sorted and put in envelopes. Today, I sat and emptied the last box full of them. Tedious work to soak in water and then carefully remove the stamp from the paper, and lay each stamp out on tea towels to dry.
So time for bed and reading. How are things with you folks. Similar weather ?

Shortbread

We usually make it in October.   We're a bit late this year.  David has a couple of large biscuit tins he stores it in.  A layer of paper towel on the bottom and another on top.  Then he hides it in the basement.  I could find it if I really tried, but I seem able to control myself. If the tin was in the pantry, they would be eaten ( and not just by me!) Once in awhile he may bring a 1/2 dozen out for supper, but not often.  We now have about 10 dozen put away, and this is the only Christmas baking we have planned. Sometimes he buys very small tins at the dollar store and gives them away a half dozen at a time.

David's Shortbread

Just wondering as I muse about baking and other things.....
Pati you mentioned awhile back that David made shortbread ( he made it, you baked it) and he put it away to age.  So how does he put it away - wrap in what and store in what? I also want to make some, and also put away to age a bit...and how do you not sneak any....does he seal it with Tuck tape?

You are so fortunate

How did he hear that it was on sale? What a great deal for you and I expect you are thrilled to be able to fill your freezer.  We don't have Safeway Stores here, but we have gone into the Metro Store (new name for the old A&P Stores) in Huntsville a few times and have found some good deals on occasion. Most times we just look at the roasts on the shelf and shake our heads. We actually have not been eating too much meat anyway. I still have some pickerel fillets in freezer - I had some for supper Friday night, with fresh broccoli and really enjoyed the fish. Soon I shall have consumed all I have and not likely to get more - we bought it right from the First Nations Reserve on Lake Nipissing but they are not gill net fishing anymore since a ban was imposed. Someone (?) was abusing the process and many fish were found dead in the nets and just left to rot. Since they are trying to renew the walleye fishery in the lake, it was thought best to ban for awhile.
I have been eating choc chip cookies all weekend but I didn't want to mention it because I feel a little guilty - I shouldn't. I should be loud and proud to bake and eat Edna's cookies. Maybe we should start a new trend! Besides there is nothing better to boost one's mood than eating Edna's cookies!
I powered up my KOBO Ereader this afternoon - hasn't been used for ages since I started to go back to library books, but thought the reader would be nice for the bus.  Took awhile to charge, and then download the updates etc. but it is now up and running again. I thought of buying the new Louise Penny book you mentioned Pati, on line from KOBO, although I still have a few others unread in the reader still.
Well, this poor old body is suffering from all that shoveling, so it's off to bed and read.  Here's to another good week for all of us - the last week in November and then it is December. I think I am travelling somewhere in December? I must check my social calendar to find out where.....haha!
Take care

Buying beef

David heard that beef was on sale at Safeway this weekend.  We went over, and sure enough, it was on sale for less than $5/lb.  We bought a couple of roasts and a large package of sirloin steak, as well as a couple of packages of rouladen.  I was almost tempted to go back in for more as we were driving out.  Then I checked the bill. On one roast, alone, we saved over $47.  We spent $95, in total, ( we bought a couple of other things, as well as the meat)and according to the bill our total savings were over $118. I don't imagine we will ever be able to buy beef for those prices again, but we now have enough to last for a couple of months.

So, to celibrate, we came home and made chocolate chip cookies!

Bacon

But how can the snow be with you already--it's still coming down here!?!

Eggs are neither here nor there, but sometimes I think I would kill for bacon.  Yesterday I attended a "sort-of" workshop with my art group.  On such days I treat myself to a BLT from Tim's, hold the tomato, and extra bacon, to take for lunch.  I balance it with a large tea rather than my special treat of a Cafe Mocha with whipped cream. As we left the drive thru, I realized I had forgotten the extra bacon.  A-r-g-h-h-h-h!

Snow

As you stated before "Nuff said" about the snow. It is just after 11 now and I've been outside since 7:30 trying to make a dint. And it is wet so you throw a shovel of snow and half of it stays in the shovel! The plough just came by and filled in the driveway nicely so I cleaned it up and as I did I thought of a reward. Every task needs a reward dangling at the end to enjoy. So I have come in for now ( still lots to do but the car and driveway are clear so a quick get away is possible if necessary) Here's the reward: I am making some bacon and eggs for myself. Oooooh!  The Dr said my cholesterol was OK so who cares about bacon and fat and cancer and whatever else I'll get from it and the eggs.
Cathy by now you will be on your way or maybe even there in Killarney already. Have a wonderful visit and celebration for Chloe. Happy Birthday little girl!
Now for my treat ......yum yum.

Games

Don't worry too much.  Depending on how many of us there are, we may end up playing "31".  Young Samantha can just about play on her own now, so this has become "flavour of the month", lately.

Thanks for the Snow

It was nice of you to send the snow...I just don't know how much you have sent. It is still snowing so I expect I will have a better idea come the morning. I took Scooby down to the lake around 5 pm. I was slow on my feet as I did not want to slip and hurt myself and the sidewalks and roads were really slick. As I approached the highway, three fire trucks and an ambulance went screaming by with lights and sirens ablazing and headed for the four lane highway south of town. I imagine there may have been an accident. With first snow falls often people are not accustomed to taking it easy. Hope all is OK.
You mentioned Bismarck and now I am worrying about our games night(s) As you know the only time I have played cards is when I have been with you - so I am rusty - somewhere in my "stuff" I have a little book where I wrote down reminders about a few of the games so hoping I can find it and refresh myself before I come. Don't want to appear too stupid!! Like the country bumpkin coming to visit the city folk?  I also want to get out my map and refresh myself. I read the WFP on line - once it mentioned the old Grace Hospital site on Wolsley and I can't for the life of me think where it was, and I can't even picture the old Grace hospital in my mind! I know it doesn't really matter but nevertheless, little things like this bother me a bit.
Well, time for bed. Tonight I am reading the newest LCBO Magazine - published quarterly and are magnificent glossy books full of gorgeous pictures of food and drinks. It's like dream heaven.....Take care

Bismark

It sure beats sitting in a hotel room.  And thanks to Kik I have a vehicle that will fit in the lot at the radisson (just!!)

Winnipeg trip

Oh Cathy, it really does never rain but pour!  You'll have to plan a few suppers with us while you're here.  Maybe even a couple of games of Bismark.

MRI

I got the results of my MRI today.  It seems I have a tear in  my achilles tendon.  I have already spent well over $100 on drugs and braces that  Blue Cross doesn't cover, and now I am supposed to get a brace to immobilise my ankle. Blue cross has never heard of this and so the pharmacy faxed in a pre-authorisation request for coverage but I haven't heard anything yet.  The brace is also well over $100 and I am just out of money.  If blue cross will cover the 80% I could take it from another bill for a while.  I really am getting sick of having one thing after another go wrong.  Okay, enough whining.  My Winnipeg trip is from December 6 to December 11.  They have booked me into the Raddisson.  That is the closest hotel (for walking) but also the most expensive for eating.  Just can't win.  I have no idea of my time table, but I will probably be working 8 to 4 so should have some free time.  We head to Killarney on Sunday for Chloe's birthday.  I couldn't find anything she wanted in Neepawa, but I picked up a couple of things to tide me over.  There will be things at the craft sale next weekend and maybe when I am in Winnipeg (and of course a Missy Mousie!!) for Christmas.  Tim and Cheryl called last night and wanted us to go to Edmonton for Christmas.  They even said they could get a flight back to Winnipeg by the 27th but I can't get anymore time off at Christmas.  Maybe next year with more warning.  Jean is holding a community supper again this year so we will be there for Christmas day.  Anyway, I am counting down the days until we are together.

Winter's here--

"Nuff said" about that, but a hot topic around here lately is "Why are the geese still here?"  Well, maybe now they'll move on.  Stupid Geese! Every area with a bit of grass has been covered with them, as well as more than a few roadways. Stupid Geese!

Since we had the ducts cleaned I have been sleeping much better.  It's wonderful to have energy, but I can't seem to focus on anything, so still end up accomplishing very little out of my agenda, although the house is looking good.

It's blowing and snowing outside, and we are staying home today, so David made a batch of shortbread to put away to age.  He makes it and I bake it.  Fair enough.  The oven is becoming erratic, and anything baking needs to be watched carefully.  I hate the idea of needing a new stove, but it is 10 years old.  Remember when we thought a stove bought for our first house would last as long as we did? Not doing anything about it right now, but we're aware that our toaster oven is going to need replacing as well, in the near future.

We did "bite the bullet" and replace my laptop yesterday.  We have arranged to have the fellow come out and set up the new one in a couple of weeks, but in the mean time, I can still use my new mouse with the picture of a fox on it. ( there was also one with an owl on it and I thought of you Beth, but chose the fox.) I don't think I'll ever learn to use a built in mouse, so plan to continue with my remote one as long as I can.  David's remote is on its last legs, so he will inherit my old one, which is fairly new.  My old laptop was a good one, and has lasted for many years (?10 or more?), so we stuck with the same manufacturer and a similar model.  I did see a couple of neat ones with only a keyboard and everything else built into a separate monitor.  They appeared to require a traditional mouse, as all of them were displayed with one attached. David says that these are the new version of a desk top.

I have wondered if my old one might still have some life in it, or if it could be reconditioned for re-use.  It's a question to ask the guy when he comes out.  It hasn't completely died. so I'll still be able to use it for awhile, and what I'm seeing might just be a symptom of a nasty virus, but either way, replacing it was the less expensive alternative.

In Manitoba, the government provides free mammograms, every two years, to women between the ages of 50 and 75, so I'm covered that way for a few more years.  Nasty procedure, but worthwhile, I think.

Another Annual Health Assessment done....

Always good to get this annual event done and over. And today was my day to do so.  Although a few more dreaded tests are in my near future ie mammogram, and colonoscopy. Yeah!!
We visited the fine old lady today in the Nursing home - I took some baking, and today was music in the big meeting room so we wheeled her down there and had great fun singing and enjoying the music. She appeared to enjoy herself.
Yesterday we went to a new restaurant in town for supper. It opened last Thursday and is called The Northern Roadhouse. We have visited every new restaurant when first opened in town so far, so decided we would give this a try. Lots of town folks there - nice to eat at a busy place. We have been to eat at places and been the only two in the room - lonely haha!  However, the prices are a bit high for our tastes (and purses) We only ordered hamburger plates each, and I had a piece of apple pie, and the bill was just under $40.00. Oh well, at least we can say we have been if anyone asks!
So a trip to Winnipeg, Cathy?  The best part seems to be the recognition of your skills and current work with the promotion and title. Sure hopes it turns out, and your new little Mousie comes home with you.  I have a Mouse and a Doll hand made from The Mouse Factory and very pleased to own them.
Soon time for bed and I am quite tired tonight......Take care

WINNIPEG

Nothing is definite but it seems i must go to Winnipeg in the next couple of weeks for training.  It should be before Christmas so i should be able to get "Missy Mousie" before Christmas. This training means a promotion.  The job won't change but I will get the title and pay for what I am doing now.  Keep your fingers crossed. We are going to Killarney on Sunday for Chloe's birthday.  I am skipping out on an ACT board meeting for this not there was any chance that ACT would win over Chloe.  Pati, I will let you know when things are confirmed.  I will have the car that Rrain gave us so I will have transportation. I  hope they don't put me in the Raddison.  I can't even afford to eat breakfast there.  At Place Louis I can cook my own meals.  Even if I eat at the restaurant there it is  cheaper than the Radisson.  I really am not looking forward  to a week in an hotel.  Jim and I have registered at Club regent.  It is good for 90 days so that will take us past Christmas. I am soooooo looking forward to being together.

Today's silliness

Cathy has spoken for the very last mouse that will ever be made in this house.  She is very pretty in her green dress and shawl, and has a lovely complexion, a little paler than some of her sisters, as hers is a soft grey wool flannel rather than velvet. Amber has given her twin a home and is quite taken with her looks.  Yesterday, I introduced her to the owls, and they have been chatting and getting to know each other.  I imagine they are telling her all about Spirit and Jacobus, as well.  We are hopeful that she can hitch a ride up to Neepawa in the next month or so.

Tea bag flicking is a dangerous pastime.  Last evening, when flicking my teabag, the spoon flew out of my hand and across the room.  I wonder if I should have taped it, and submitted it to that reality show that shows stupid people stunts.

Loved the pictures

Took me awhile to go through them and look at every face, and around the table and room. I shall be so very happy to see you all in person. So many changes since I was last there. (how long ago was that?) Do you think you shall recognize me?  Maybe I should make a sign for the Bus Terminal - BIFFJO  is  HERE - my hair has changed a bit in colour as well, haha!
Thanks for this.  Take care.

birthday Party

Last evening We went to Amber's for  joint birthday party for the two girls.  They have both had a separate party with their friends, but this was for family.  They had asked for a family evening, where we could play games.  It was a short evening, but we managed to open gifts, play part of a game of "31", and eat cake.  Here some pictures, taken at the end of it all.

In the above you may notice that there have been changes in hair colour.  Sheila has refined her natural blond, Judy is now very, very red, and Gillian has gone quite dark. I think Jessica is also darker than last time I posted a picture, and Jeremy is becoming a aficionado of facial hair.

Here you can see the tiara that I found in the computer room and provided for one of the birthday girls.  Jess had one too, but chose not to wear it.

Amber took the pictures with her phone, and we tried to post them from her house, but the blog wouldn't accept her sign in.  So she isn't in any of them, but we did manage to catch Loren.

Critters

Here are some "critters" I want to get rid of.  Any takers?

finally--something to talk about

Today we had the ducts cleaned.  Exciting, eh?  My allergies have been bothering me more and more, to the point that, one night last week, I ended up sleeping in the recliner, because I just couldn't breathe lying down.  It took about 3 hours, and wasn't cheap, but probably hasn't ever been done before,in this house.  But they needed to access every vent, both for warm air and cool return.  This meant quite a lot of turmoil.  This made me realize that all of the "paper" we keep in the house was probably as much of a problem as the dirty ducts. (David says that all of the fabric is just as much of a problem, but I prefer to believe that I minimize that by keeping it in plastic tubs.  Talk about denial!!) I decided to start in the computer room, as one of the bookcases had to be moved to access a vent.  Using the Keep, recycle, donate, and garbage system, I filled at least four laundry baskets and totes with"stuff", and only dealt with half the room.  I was brutal.

Here's a picture with the bookcases half done. I haven't started on the computer desk.
And below is a picture of the bookcases.  All of the shelves had been stuffed like the three on the bottom right.  All of that stuff on the bottom right shelf, and the floor in front of it, is family photo albums.  We keep talking about getting together and going through them, but it never seems to happen.  I'm going to go through them and save photos of Mom and Dad, us, and our children.  I don't think I'm going to keep pictures of various people from before we were born, or people I can't identify. ( Although Dad was a good looking guy back then) Does anyone have a problem with this?

The week so far.....

Yesterday's Remembrance Day service at the Legion was attended by us - we walked over from home which was nice -bright sunny day. The service itself left much to be desired- seems to get more disorganized each year we attend but I look at it as my way of remembering and forget the distractions and focus on my thoughts only. Today the rain has come and told it may turn to snow? How exciting NOT.
We have to go to North Bay Friday to attend visitation for a friend of Harry's who died on Nov 9. He was 92 years old and a veteran. They met working at the Antifraud Centre as SeniorBusters. We went up there a few times to till his garden and plant some of our tomatoes and peppers for him. The last few years he didn't bother having a garden though.
I have brought out the Christmas cards and will get a them soon. Harry is suggesting that we forego the tree and house decorations this year since I shall be away and as I think about it more and more I am tending to agree. We'll see! (I'm the one who actually does it all so may be a serious consideration for me haha)
Well, time to start in with another day. Hope all is well. Take care

That sounds awful!

What a way to spend your weekend. I'm glad to hear that things are getting back to normal. We were spoiled growing up by living in the very first area of the city to ever re-gain power after an outage.  We didn't experience lengthy problems.  When we lived in the apartment in Edmonton, Loren unplugged the fridge, and I didn't find it until the next day.  What a mess--both the fridge and cross top freezer.  I don't envy you having to clean that up.  and the wasted food!!

The art show went well.  Not as many artists showing work, as the last one, but this meant that there was more room, and, with a little more viewing room, it was easier to see some of the items.  I only had three pieces, a small hanging, a small framed embroidered picture, and a large wall hanging, (see other blog). I didn't expect to sell any thing.  People often ask "Exactly what is it that you do?",  and this seemed like a good way to show them.  However, the framed piece sold, which was a pleasant surprise.

Today we did a little more grocery shopping, and turned it into a bit of fun.  I get e-mail from Sobey's and Air Miles, offering coupons for certain items.  You click on the items you may want to buy, and the deductions or whatever are supposed to turn up automatically at the cash register.  So today we tried it out.  Not only do they turn  up but they are printed right on your cash register receipt.  We also bought boneless chicken ( no coupon for that)which is now divided up into meals size portions and in the freezer. With  all of the power cooking we've been doing, our freezer is now stocked for the next few months.  This will be another thing that we won't have to worry about next month.

What a weekend

Friday morning around 9 am a wicked storm blew through - not forecast but nevertheless arrived with fierce winds and torrential rains blowing sideways - lasted for about 30 minutes but causing severe damage. Trees falling, hydro poles ripped from the ground, and major power hubs annihilated. We were without power from 0930 am Friday until this morning, Sunday, at 1:30 am. No power, no water (which means no flushing toilet), and no heat. I plugged in a rotary phone that I keep on hand for times like this so I knew communication would be possible. I also charged my cell phone in the running car to have available as well. All around I could hear the generators chugging away. I was so tempted to try to pull our generator out of the shed and see if it would start. But I could not do it myself - far too heavy and awkward to manage - so there it stayed. In the end, the big freezers were OK, and even the above fridge freezer, but I spent the morning cleaning out the fridge.  And all day today catching up with the results of the power outage. The small bar fridge leaked all over the floor, and had to be managed. One good thing was that Harry drove to the next town where hydro was on ( on a different grid) and bought a large pizza for our Saturday night supper. And he had a little microburner that he lite and put a pot of water ( bottled water bought at the grocery store in the next town) on for me, and I had enough hot water to make half a pot of coffee in my french press (before the fluid ran out). I am not a really happy camper right now.
Anxious to hear how your Art Show was Pati. And glad you got through your Remembrance readings Cathy, even if a few in attendance caused some distraction.  We plan to attend the local Services at the Legion on Wednesday.  Mike has gone out to the bush again for deer hunting this week. Hope he will be successful for the meat he looks forward to,
Time for bed. Hope the week to come will be more favourable to one's morale - even if snow is in the forecast!  Take care

One banquet down

Last night was the Legion Annual banquet. One of the members there got his 70th pin and another his 65th.  I don't think I will match them!  I read some poems from a book called The Barbed Wire.  It was written in a POW camp in Germany.  I was asked for 15 to 20 minutes, but I could tell some members were dosing off so I cut a couple out.  And Ivan Trail kept getting cell phone calls and answering them very loudly.  It really threw me off at first but then I ignored him.   The food was good as always.  The usual roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas and corn and gravy, but they had some really good and unusual salads that I enjoyed.  We spent 3 hours yesterday morning going through the Whitemud Sheds.  We have gathered a lot of "garbage" over the years.  I think there were over 30 doors,  lots of flats for building sets,  tons of wood, old clothes, old shoes.  Our plan is to downsise to one room at the VCC and one small shed.  The back of our truck is full of stuff for VCC and Jim is supposed to pick up a few more things this afternoon.  I really think we need some younger members to do some of this work. :(   Today is supposed to be quite nice so we hope to finish up some of our yard work. It was so miserable the last little while that we seldom ventured outdoors.  It is mostly putting furniture away and taking down the solar lights.  We  should get it done before we have to go to town to do other peoples stuff.  Whitemud is doing the Dicken's reading again this year so there is a run through at 2pm and I still have to meet with Kristy about the craft sale.  She is going to the Grey Cup instead of working all day at the sale.  I think she really should get her priorities right :).  Jim is up.  Time to get going.  Have a good week.

You said it...

Stupid!! A good word, and you're right on the money! Same thing in my world these days - different situations but still STUPID covers it well!
Anyway, I was going to tell you we bought our first Christmas gifts today, but I guess you got the jump on us! Really late to get going this year but at least it has started, and you are right - now it has started I feel as if I can continue. Took a long time to get enthused about it. Mike and Erin were bragging that they have theirs all done now. Erin has a big family and list to get through although Mike only has us.
We went to Huntsville to visit the lady Phyllis again. Of course went to the usual haunts before it was time to visit - ie ReStore, Thrift Shop and to the Mall food court for lunch.  I had my Tim's coffee and apple fritter - a real treat for me!! We had to put in some time before going to the Nursing Home, so stopped into Canadian Tire. And it was here that inspiration hit me and I got a few ideas for gifts - yeah.  And I was just thinking last night that I really didn't care if I ever went to shop. But of course, wouldn't the recipients be a little upset if nothing came their way??
Cannot believe this gorgeous weather - hot and sunny - shirtsleeve weather. If only it would last.  I had to go yesterday to renew my library book for a third time. It seems I cannot get into it. I want to read it but come bedtime, I can hardly wait to hit the pillow. I tried to finish off the big greenhouse yesterday which meant chiseling the frame of the door so it would shut. I managed to cut myself on several fingers, and create huge blisters on a few more and the "stupid " door doesn't close properly yet.
Time for bed- tomorrows another day. Have a fun weekend Pati, and let us know how your art piece was received by the viewers. Take care.

Damn clocks!

We had an early doctor's appointment today and needed an alarm. So, just in case---, we set both clocks, and sure enough, we are now in the process of re-booting them. Stupid clocks!  Got my flu shot, though.

It's also that time of year when the streets and roads are covered with geese.  Stupid geese!

We've started a bit of Christmas shopping, putting a bit of a dent in it, but still a ways to go.  Still, it feels good to get a jump on it.  Now I have to think about buying wrapping paper.  I forgot to calculate that cost into the budget.  Stupid, period.

This weekend is the big show and sale with my artists' group.  I have to hang my one piece tomorrow and then work in the refreshment area both Saturday and Sunday.  Other years I have worked selling raffle tickets, as that is a job that can be done sitting down.  But last year, I found myself being given orders by three different women, all of whom seemed to think they were in charge, and all of whom wanted things done a different way. One really annoyed me by  stating quite firmly that we would do the raffle draw later,  after the show was closed, and everyone had left. Then we would arrange to delivery everything. I tried to point out that the lottery license stated that the draw would be done at 4:00 on that day and in that location, and that, legally, that is what we had to do.  Finally, someone on the executive came along and told her the same thing, so she agreed to do it.  Stupid!
I expect that there will be some sort of problem again this year--there always is, but I will know who is in charge of the work I'm doing, and also know that she is an intelligent and organized person.  Unfortunately I also know she is going to be out party-ing Friday night.

Whatever happens, David has greed that we can go out for supper on Sunday, after it's over.  He has won cash on 649 the last two weeks, but I don't really expect him to spend the money on me.

Just a quickie

You never know do you? Just when I was feeling pretty low (one of those days/weeks/months I guess haha!) a few messages came through email again from my Nursing Classmates with updates on the planned get together in Kelowna in May (to celebrate 50 years since we entered Nursing in 1966). Of course I sent my regrets. But the Class Coordinator to whom I wrote a few words with my regrets, responded with a lengthy email just for me (not distribution like the previous ones)  The first paragraph surprised me but thrilled me - so I must share it with you....."It was nice to receive your message. I remember fondly our times together when we shared some great laughs. I have a lovely mental picture of your smile and I can still hear your wonderful laugh"  So I guess I must have smiled and laughed at some point in the past, eh?
Anyway, must go now. How are things there?

Power cooking, you say

I've been doing a bit, but pacing it, as I haven't been sleeping well.
Still we did 6 batches of Apple Crisp, today, now in the freezer. Checking things out, I see that spaghetti will have to go on my "To Do" list.  I bought and froze a big package of lean hamburger into one meal sizes, so that I can use them one at a time or double them up for things like spaghetti.

David is supposedly watching the football games this afternoon, but judging from the snoring, I guess that getting all those apples ready for me wore him out.  We also spent some time, today, looking for the aquarium bulbs that I use for my light box.  Could not find them anywhere, but did find one project that I put away a few months ago and have been searching for ever since.  Now I have to find the fabric, that I also put away to finish it.

OMG!  It's time to put the potatoes on, and I've forgotten to put dessert in the oven.

Power Cooking

I'm done for today. I made 8 x 8 cakepan casseroles.  I got 4 lasagne,  4 chicken brocolli alfredo, and 4 spagetti casseroles done and in the freeser.  Well, almost all in the freeser.  Lasagne for supper tonight.  I wanted to do some soup and quiche, but my freeser is overloaded right now.  Once these are frosen we can make more.   I hope you are okay Beth.  I saw Brad Gushue fall on the ice at the masters.  They kept playing it over and over and I couldn't stand to watch it.  I hope your fall was not as serious. They say turning the clocks back gives you an extra hour of sleep.  All I got was up an hour earlier!  Hence all the power cooking done before noon.  Now what do I do?  I just finished the fourth batch of dishes.  One downside to power cooking. We also had breakfast when Jim got up.  Right in the middle of everything, of course.  Rrain gave me her old car so that we would have a spare vehicle.  Gives us a bit more of a sense of security since neither one of us wants to leave the other trapped at home, just in case of an emergency.  She got a 2008 Chevy HHR.  Silver.  She went to Winnipeg this weekend to try it out.  I don't think I should have sat down.  I may never get up again.  That'll teach me.  I have the 9th and 10th off work, so that will give me a 5 day stretch.  Of course my Doctors appt is at 9:30 on the 9th :(

Hallowe'en

Oh dear!  Not a good day for you, Beth. We just can't afford to fall, at our age, as the consequences are more severe than with younger folk.

We bought a big box of goodies--not to give away--but to eat.  (The price was right) We tried a couple but found them old and stale and not worth eating ( again,  consequences), so for the first time in many, many years had goodies to give away at the door.  I can't remember the last time we did that.  I'm pretty sure we haven't at this house, but David seems to think we have.  When I used to be all alone at Hallowe'en,while David drove his father to Florida, I never gave away anything at the door.

We had just enough to take care of the younger ones that came early, and ran out before the older ones came around.  Some of the little ones were so cute!  We had a little dragon with glow in the dark wings--3-4 years old, and another little angel, about the same age, who was accompanied with about 5 older children.

We haven't played bingo in years, and never won anything at it, so don't miss it at all.

Tomorrow, I have to make up my Apple Crisp for the freezer, and plan to cook a corned beef brisket for supper.  We found some of them for sale at Safeway, but could only afford one. We used to try to order one once in awhile, but the order never seemed to get filled, so we gave up.  It's a meal I relish, and it cooks up nicely in the slow cooker.  Since it is pickled, not smoked, as so much of the corned beef is these days, David can actually eat it with me.

Bingo

Bingo will not be a new interest for me!!  You have to know what you are doing in order to play, and neither of us did. It was most fortunate that two ladies sat across from us who were experts, and were most gracious in assisting us and guiding us through every game and all the nuances of the games. We did not get back home until 7 pm and then it was a mad rush to turn on the lights, and ready the outside for guests. I fear we missed most of the action as only had maybe twenty at the door before it started to rain, and I closed things down. In cleaning up I fell (soundly) against the rock garden and smashed both my knee and my face against rocks. Again, very fortunate that I did not get hurt worse than I did (ie perhaps unconscious from the head and rock colliding) So I limped in and I expect will be sore come morning. I wonder if I will be sporting a black eye???
Anyway, I just finished logging in the Food Dairy (last of 7 days- yippee) And shall now crawl to bed.  Hope your Hallowe'en went better than mine. And tomorrow we must remember to turn back our clocks. I'll change my bedside clock when I go to bed, and I just stopped Daddy's Grandfather clock and will start it again in the morning. Take care

Spooky

Looks a bit spooky outside in our yard now after I spent some time today decorating and raking leaves up. I even had to level the gravel in the driveway to cover up a plastic drain pipe that has made its way to the surface- don't want any goblins tripping over it. It was sunny out but cold. nevertheless I attempted to do a bit for tomorrow night. It is supposed to rain all day and evening tomorrow so may be fewer kids, and most of my decorations would get wet so won't put them up until close to kids coming.  The other thing that is interfering with my plans, is that Harry entered my name into the radio station and I won the Bingo Bonanza prize. We have to go to North Bay to the Bingo Country Hall for 2:30 pm tomorrow to play Bingo (its all free, but still.....makes you wonder eh?) I do not think it will be over until maybe three hours later, and then a mad dash home to greet little goblins. Usually they start to come around 5:30 pm here, so I fear we may be rushed a bit ?? Oh boy! At least we did not win the weeks vacation in Jamaica to take place the second week of January in spite of having lots of ballots in the draw. I crossed my fingers that our name will not be called out, and this morning my wish came true haha!
Well, I have to do the Food Diary log in yet before I can head to bed, so I shall wish you all a Happy Hallowe'en, and a good weekend. I have my lucky ticket for the lottery. I went to buy tickets his afternoon and everyone in the store was excited because a fellow in Sundridge won $2,000,000 last week and the ticket had been purchased at this store.  I don't know what draw it was but his name was Harry something, and the owner was quick to say to me "...but not your Harry". Too bad, so sad!  Maybe tonight though!
Take care

Pillows

One of the item on my shopping list has been pillows, as we like to replace them once in awhile.  We did our grocery shopping today, and on checking out in Superstore, discovered that we had spent enough to be eligible for the weekly bonus, which was pillows!  While I hate to spend that much on groceries, it's still nice to get a bonus like that.

Processed meat and cancer

The article I read suggest that 50 grams a day or more as the tipping point.  I'm not going to worry about my two Smokies a year, and since I so rarely get bacon......
But I will think twice about trips to the Deli.
Beef is an infrequent treat around here, and quickly becoming less so, with the current price.  But the article appeared to classify things like pork and lamb as being as dangerous as beef, and that concerns me a bit ( the pork, not the lamb)
